The Red Canyon

The Red Canyon is a very special and beautiful site in Israel. The site is actually a short section of Wadi Shani in a point where the wadi carves its way deep into red sandstone, creating a narrow and impressive canyon. This section is known as the “Red Canyon”. A hike through the Red Canyon is one of the most popular routes in the Eilat Mountains.

When planning your visit to the Red Canyon Eilat, consider the weather and activities you would like to do. It is recommended that you arrange for a guided tour as well. There are several hiking routes available in the canyon, each offering a unique journey with its own selection of breathtaking views. Additionally, be sure to have enough sunscreen, snacks, and drinking water ready for a day full of exploration!

 

Hike Options

Short Hike: While this trail is only 2 Km (1.2 miles), and it’s very family friendly, this trail show you the geological wonder of this natural canyon. All you need to do is to follow the green marks along the shallow wadi. After about 700 meters, the gorge becomes deep and narrow. It is where the “Red Canyon” begins. Walk and look for the Black marked trail on your right that will take you back to the trailhead.

Full Hike: If you are looking for bigger challenge and you like to hike this is the trail for you. This trail takes 5 km (3.1 miles) and includes a few sections with metal wedges and ladders inside the narrow canyon. On this experience you got the most you can from this site. Follow The green trail and you will find your first junction with the black trail. Keep going through the green route until you find the second junction with the black trail (about 3 km (1.8 miles) from the parking lot. The next junction you will see is with the red marked trail. On this point turn right and follow it for 1 km (0.6miles), back to the starting point.

While these landmarks may look similar at first glance, the subtle differences can guide you in the right direction. It is also important to keep track of time as the sunlight and shadows will help you find your way back out. Additionally, make sure to wear appropriate shoes with plenty of grip, as some paths are steep and slippery.

Keep an eye on your surroundings and remember that the walls are steep and slippery in certain places; if needed, use ropes and climbing aids to traverse these areas safely.
